Volunteer at Coastal Roots Farm

At Coastal Roots Farm, we rely on volunteers to drive our mission of Nourishing Community. Whether you're an individual looking to give back or a group seeking a hands-on service experience, we offer meaningful opportunities to connect with the land, learn about sustainable agriculture, and support our impact.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

Join one of our regularly scheduled volunteer sessions, open to the public.

Sundays in the Soil
📅 Sundays | 1:30 – 3:30 PM
Support seasonal farm tasks to help maintain our Education Farm and Gardens—a living laboratory for youth programming. Tasks may include weeding, mulching, planting, harvesting, bed prep, staining, light construction, and general maintenance.

Rise and Shine
📅 Wednesdays | 8:00 – 9:45 AM
Assist our Production Team with seasonal farm tasks in our vegetable fields and Food Forest. The Farm grows about 80,000 pounds of organic produce annually, with over 80% donated to community members experiencing food insecurity. Tasks may include weeding, mulching, planting, harvesting, and bed prep.

Community Volunteering Guidelines

  • Pre-registration & waivers required (Volunteers under 18 require a parent/guardian signature)
  • Age requirement: Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are responsible for directly supervising their children and differentiating tasks as needed. Children must be able to follow instructions and use tools safely.
  • What to bring: Refillable water bottle, sunhat, closed-toe shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We recommend long sleeves and pants. Gardening gloves are optional, and we have some available to borrow.
  • Cancellations: To cancel your shift, email volunteer@coastalrootsfarm.org.
  • Accessibility: Tasks tend to be quite physical requiring volunteers to bend, squat, kneel, and lift. For questions regarding accessibility while Volunteering, contact Keelin or click to learn about accessibility accommodations on the Farm.
  • Location & Directions: Enter off 441 Saxony Rd and park in the Apple Lot. Meet at the Coastal Roots Farm Barn. Arrive promptly for instructions!

Private Group Volunteer Experiences

Perfect for teams, community groups, and organizations looking for a unique, impactful experience.

Engage your team or group in a meaningful, hands-on agricultural experience while supporting the Farm’s mission. Tasks vary based on seasonal needs and may include anything from spreading mulch and planting crops to farm beautification and small construction projects. Be ready to get your hands dirty and embrace the full experience of a day in the life of a farmer!

Volunteer experiences run 2.5 hours beginning with a brief orientation to the Farm, and overview of volunteer tasks, and tool use and safety information.

Scholarships are available to help cover field trip program costs. While private scheduling is limited, our free public volunteer days may also be a great fit.
