A Nonprofit Community Farm in Encinitas, California

Coastal Roots Farm cultivates healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom.

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you sha “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the corner of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and the stranger.”

This ancient wisdom from the Torah or Jewish Bible is called Pe’ah and guides our daily choices at Coastal Roots Farm.

While we do not leave our harvest for those in need to pick, we do share what we grow every week at our pay-what-you-can Farm stand. We also distribute food to those in need at regular distribution sites across the area. We do all this because we are fueled by ancient wisdom and we know that it is our responsibility to help mend our broken world.

Chickens enjoying a full snail feast in their new Chickens enjoying a full snail feast in their new home

Our chickens play a vital role in our regenerative cycle. Each time a production field is harvested from, the chickens move in to devour all left-over scraps and fertilize the soil.

Once the chickens are done (about two weeks) they move to a new field, and we plant a cover crop. Once the cover crop grows, we lay down an occultation tarp to block out the sun and trap nutrients (like nitrogen) in the soil. After adding some compost, we are ready to plant, and the cycle begins again!
Farm Stand finds COLLARD GREENS Collard greens a Farm Stand finds COLLARD GREENS

Collard greens are fibrous, antioxidant-rich, and great sources of Vitamin A.

With their wide surface area, collard greens can be steamed to soften and then used as a wrap or can be cut into ribbons and added to soups, salad, and other mixed dishes (If cooking, they are best cooked at a low temperature over a long period of time).

Storing? Because of their very waxy leaf, collard greens are pretty resilient when it comes to storage. They can be stacked or pre-chopped and stored in an air tight, or left whole and wrapped in a damp towel.

Get yours this Thursday 12-3pm or Sunday 10am-3pm at the Farm Stand!

Parenting IS Spiritual Practice! As Rabbi Danya Parenting IS Spiritual Practice!

As Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg writes in her great new book Nurturing the Wow, “Parenthood is difficult, demanding, and draining. And yet... if we can approach it from a different mindset, perhaps the work of parenting itself can offer the solace we seek.... Can ancient ideas about relationships, drudgery, pain, devotion, and purpose help make the hard parts of a parent’s job easier and the magical stuff even more so?”

Here at Coastal Roots Farm, we believe that ancient ideas about caring for the earth might also potentially “make the hard parts of a parent’s job easier.” That’s why, through our community classes, programs, posts, and celebrations, we aim to support and uplift parents in the community. Please become a part of what we are doing here, and let the Farm help you as you do the great work of parenting!

🌱 Farm Stand Finds 🌱 WILD SPINACH This hea 🌱 Farm Stand Finds 🌱 WILD SPINACH

This hearty spinach alternative (actually not a part of the spinach family but similar in look and taste) originated in New Zealand, Australia, and Asia and is considered a perennial in those warmer climates. Apparently Captain Cook and his crew ate it to prevent scurvy in the 1700s!

This nutrient-dense plant can be found growing along the shorelines of Australia and further inland in woodland settings. In North America, it's grown as more of a tender annual, but varies depending on your zone.

Grab yours this Thursday 12-3pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. Be sure to ask our Farm Stand staff for recipe ideas to incorporate new veggies into your diet!

“You should teach your kids spiritual wisdom, a “You should teach your kids spiritual wisdom, a profession...and how to swim!”

That’s what we are told in the Talmud, that sprawling, rich and wonderful series of 2nd century sacred Jewish texts. “Ok,” you may be thinking, “I get it about teaching a kid some kind of wisdom literature that they could live by; and ok about helping them find a profession. But teaching a kid to swim – that's really the third most important thing I have to teach them?!” Of course, swimming is a wonderful activity and could possibly save your life, but perhaps the Rabbis of the Talmud were thinking on a deeper level than doing laps.

What if by swimming they actually meant being able to weather life’s storms and stay afloat? What if they were talking about pliability and resilience? Couldn’t we then agree that those are enormous gifts to be able to teach and pass on to our children, especially in today’s confusing and constantly evolving world?
