A Nonprofit Community Farm in Encinitas, California

Coastal Roots Farm cultivates healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom.

The holiday today celebrates the birth and legacy The holiday today celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist César Chávez.

César Estrada Chávez, was a champion for social justice and advocate for hardworking people who build and sustain our Nation. Born into poverty and raised by migrant workers, Chávez courageously dedicated his life to improving conditions for workers across the country.

Chavez paved the way for better wages and working conditions which nearly 2.5 million farmworkers benefit from today.

Although the fight for labor rights and fair wages continues, we would not be where we are today without the efforts of César Chávez. We honor him by continuing the movement, tending to the land, connecting with indigenous practices, sharing our knowledge, and putting the care of people and planet first.

New Blog Post! Passover: The Gift of Being Ready New Blog Post! Passover: The Gift of Being Ready

“Each year growing up, I would fondly recall the traditional story of why the Israelites (Children of Israel) made matzah… As the story goes, they were racing to get out of Egypt on the night of their liberation from slavery, the night of being ‘passed over’ and sent to freedom, and they didn’t have time to wait for their bread to rise.

“But this year, my first year celebrating Passover as Director of Jewish Life at Coastal Roots Farm, I have become lit up inside with a new way of understanding matzah.

“And my new understanding? That matzah isn’t only about rushing and therefore not making bread. It isn’t the result of lack of time. It is about readiness.”

#FarmStandfinds KOHLRABI Not the most commonly s #FarmStandfinds KOHLRABI

Not the most commonly sought-after vegetable, kohlrabi is a cruciferous vegetable whose flavor and texture is somewhere between broccoli and jicama. Peeling the skin reveals a crunchy, water-dense vegetable that is great raw with your favorite dip, roasted in the oven, or shredded into a salad, and the greens are edible as well and can be cooked like kale. Additionally, kohlrabi is an excellent source of vitamin B6 and potassium.

Storage: Kohlrabi will do just fine as it is in the refrigerator with the leaves removed and stored separately. Once cut into, keep any leftovers wrapped to prevent water loss and consume within a few days. Storage suggestions include loose in the veggie drawer, in an airtight bag, and leaves stored separately wrapped in a damp paper towel.

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you sha “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the corner of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and the stranger.”

This ancient wisdom from the Torah or Jewish Bible is called Pe’ah and guides our daily choices at Coastal Roots Farm.

While we do not leave our harvest for those in need to pick, we do share what we grow every week at our pay-what-you-can Farm stand. We also distribute food to those in need at regular distribution sites across the area. We do all this because we are fueled by ancient wisdom and we know that it is our responsibility to help mend our broken world.

Chickens enjoying a full snail feast in their new Chickens enjoying a full snail feast in their new home

Our chickens play a vital role in our regenerative cycle. Each time a production field is harvested from, the chickens move in to devour all left-over scraps and fertilize the soil.

Once the chickens are done (about two weeks) they move to a new field, and we plant a cover crop. Once the cover crop grows, we lay down an occultation tarp to block out the sun and trap nutrients (like nitrogen) in the soil. After adding some compost, we are ready to plant, and the cycle begins again!
Farm Stand finds COLLARD GREENS Collard greens a Farm Stand finds COLLARD GREENS

Collard greens are fibrous, antioxidant-rich, and great sources of Vitamin A.

With their wide surface area, collard greens can be steamed to soften and then used as a wrap or can be cut into ribbons and added to soups, salad, and other mixed dishes (If cooking, they are best cooked at a low temperature over a long period of time).

Storing? Because of their very waxy leaf, collard greens are pretty resilient when it comes to storage. They can be stacked or pre-chopped and stored in an air tight, or left whole and wrapped in a damp towel.

Get yours this Thursday 12-3pm or Sunday 10am-3pm at the Farm Stand!

Parenting IS Spiritual Practice! As Rabbi Danya Parenting IS Spiritual Practice!

As Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg writes in her great new book Nurturing the Wow, “Parenthood is difficult, demanding, and draining. And yet... if we can approach it from a different mindset, perhaps the work of parenting itself can offer the solace we seek.... Can ancient ideas about relationships, drudgery, pain, devotion, and purpose help make the hard parts of a parent’s job easier and the magical stuff even more so?”

Here at Coastal Roots Farm, we believe that ancient ideas about caring for the earth might also potentially “make the hard parts of a parent’s job easier.” That’s why, through our community classes, programs, posts, and celebrations, we aim to support and uplift parents in the community. Please become a part of what we are doing here, and let the Farm help you as you do the great work of parenting!
